Spike strip used to stop Ford Thunderbird during high speed chase that ended by Rexburg

REXBURG — A spike strip was used to stop a vehicle that was driving over 100 miles per hour from law enforcement near Madison County.
The incident happened Wednesday night. The high-speed chase began at 8:03 p.m. on U.S. Highway 20 westbound near milepost 353 just south of Ashton, according to Idaho State Police Lt. Marvin Crain.
He said it all began when police tried to stop a 1979 Ford Thunderbird after the driver was traveling 84 mph in a 65 mph zone.
The vehicle didn’t stop and, at one point, drove over 100 mph. The Rexburg Police Department and Madison County Sheriff’s Office came to assist Idaho State Police.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office posted body camera footage on social media Thursday showing one of their deputies successfully deploying a spike strip, which quickly ended the chase. Crain said the Thunderbird was spiked at milepost 333.
Crain told EastIdahoNews.com it ended at 8:19 p.m. at milepost 332, near the south Rexburg exit.
He said the driver, who was a man, was taken into custody for felony eluding.
“There were three passengers. They were cited and released for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia,” Crain said.
No injuries were reported, and no vehicles were damaged in the chase other than the tires that were spiked.
No names have been released at this time.
