Newly released documents outline cause for manhunt this spring

RIGBY — Charging documents give new details about the events leading up to the manhunt of an “armed and dangerous” man this spring.
In April, the Idaho Falls Police Department arrested 26-year-old Makena Lagana after the Rigby Police Department reported he had a felony warrant for aggravated assault. Lagana made his initial appearance in Jefferson County on the felony charge with a using a deadly weapon sentencing enhancement on June 26.
Few details were initially released about why authorities searched for Lagana, but an affidavit of probable cause recently obtained by EastIdahoNews.com gives more information.
The report shows police were called to a Rigby home on March 26 after a victim came home around 10 p.m. and found his garage door open.

When the victim entered the garage, Lagana, who was inside, pointed a chrome revolver at his face and said, “Run b****,” according to court documents. The victim later told officers, “I most definitely almost died tonight.”
Lagana reportedly used to live in a neighboring apartment and had been evicted. When the landlord evicted Lagana, some of his items were placed in the victim’s garage, but Lagan’s things “had been removed a while” before the incident. Shortly after confronting the victim, Lagana left the property.
Investigators spoke with someone who knew Lagana, who said he was “crazy” and was using drugs. The person also gave an address of Lagan’s home in Idaho Falls and an attempt to locate was sent out.
Then on April 13, the Idaho Falls Police Department spotted Lagana near Benton Street and St. Clair Road. According to a police news release, after a brief foot chase, officers took Lagana into custody. He was being held in the Bonneville County jail until being brought to Jefferson County for the initial appearance.

Although Lagana is accused of crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
A preliminary hearing for Lagana is currently scheduled for Friday. However, a motion was filed to push off the hearing to a later date.
