AMMON — Community members are invited to attend and participate in the fourth annual East Idaho “Messiah” Sing-In this month.
The concert, which is sponsored by Ammon Arts and The Langston Family Foundation, will take place December 17 at 6 p.m. at the Thunder Ridge High School auditorium, 4941 East First Street in Ammon.
“It’s a fun Christmas event,” Ammon mayor and organizer of the event Sean Coletti said. “(The concert) fills the auditorium with people.”
The nondenominational Christmas concert will feature a full choir and orchestra — Coletti said there are around 100 or more people in the choir — as well as multiple soloists performing George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah.”
“Messiah” tells the story of Christ’s life and mission, starting with Old Testament prophets foretelling his coming. The oratorio then covers Christ’s suffering, death and ascension before rejoicing in his promise of redemption and victory over sin and death.
This year’s soloists include Lonna Joy Smoot, Corbin Rasmussen, Theresa Flannery, Andrew Hansen, Hanna Stacey, Lili Mathusek, Rachel Barton, Jean-Michel Knickerbocker, Karin Dance, Sean Coletti, Clara Taylor, Phylicia Fife, Owen Shelly, Linda Haffner and Danielle Bankhead.
“We have very talented local soloists,” Coletti noted. “They are all volunteer people from the community.”
Audience members will have the opportunity to not only listen to the uplifting music but to sing along to several selections, including “And The Glory of the Lord,” “And He Shall Purify,” “For Unto Us a Child is Born,” “Glory to God,” the “Hallelujah Chorus” and “Worthy is the Lamb that was Slain.”
Audience members are encouraged to bring their Handel’s Messiah books to the performance. The program will also have the lyrics on it, and Coletti is working on a link to make the music available on your phone.
The concert is free, but audience members are invited to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the Community Food Basket in Idaho Falls.
