Man placed on probation for threatening woman with gun

Elijah D. Chavez | Bonneville County Jail
AMMON — A judge placed a local man on probation for holding a woman at gunpoint earlier this year.
Elijah D. Chavez, 29, pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault and was given five years of probation by District Judge Jon Shindurling Wednesday. Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Chavez in August after he pointed a gun at the woman while in a car.
As part of a plea agreement, a felony attempted strangulation charge from 2018 was amended to misdemeanor battery.
Police reports show during the Aug. 30 incident, after pointing the gun at the victim, Chavez pushed her out of the car and drove away. The victim then ran to the closest home, yelling for help. Chavez had reportedly been drinking alcohol and the victim believed that played a role in the encounter.

Police found Chavez at a nearby home and found a handgun and a loaded magazine inside his car.
Shindurling also ordered Chavez to complete 50 hours of community service and pay over $900 in fees and fines. An overhanging two to five-year prison sentence could be served if Chavez is not successful on probation.
