JEROME — A local man is dead after a ratchet from an unknown vehicle flew through the windshield of his vehicle causing a fatal crash.
The crash occurred at 6:30 p.m. Friday on Interstate 84, near milepost 172 in a construction zone, just east of Jerome, according to a Idaho State Police news release.
Police reports show Javier Jimenez Negrete, 51, and passengers Anselma Martinez Vazquez, 45, and a juvenile, all from Jerome, were traveling eastbound in a 2020 GMC Canyon.
At some point a ratchet flew through the windshield striking Negrete, who then drove off the right shoulder into the median, where the vehicle came to rest, according to the release.
Negrete died at the scene.
All occupants were wearing their seatbelts. The crash remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
