Looking back: Husband hits wife’s car in hit-and-run incident and cat rescued after being on power pole for almost 24 hours

The largest graduating class in the history of the Rigby High School, 162, faces an audience of parents, relatives and friends. Caption dated May 27, 1965.| Courtesy The Rigby Star IDAHO FALLS — EastIdahoNews.com is looking back at what life was like during the week of May 26 to June 1 in east Idaho history. 1900-1925 BURLEY — A man was severely injured while working at a gravel pit, The Burley Herald reported on May 27, 1922. E.R. Pollock, of Bonner Springs, Kansas, was working around cars at a gravel pit near Marion in Cassia County when the accident happened. Pollock was trying to get into a car, and his leg came in contact with the wheels, which threw him down. He was rushed to Burley for emergency treatment. Dr. Cooper, of Burley, and Dr. Reins, of Oakley, amputated the mangled limb close to the thigh. After the surgery, Pollock was reported to be resting well, and the article said he would “survive the shock.” 1926-1950 POCATELLO — A typewriting contest was held in Pocatello and representatives from local schools competed in it, The Rigby Star reported on May 29, 1930. The schools that competed were from Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Burley, American Falls, Rigby and Rockland. Roba Duffy placed second in the contest with 65 words per minute and Verla Hill took third place with 64 words per minute. The winner was a girl from Burley, but her name was not mentioned in the article. She defeated Duffy by only one more word per minute. It’s not clear what all the winners received but the paper said Duffy got a two-month free scholarship in the summer school at the Gate City Business College. 1951-1975 MENAN — A cat was rescued from a power pole in Jefferson County after it was there for almost 24 hours, The Rigby Star reported on May 27, 1965. A small white cat allegedly ran up a power pole on Saturday following a severe thunderstorm in Menan. The cat could be heard but not located until Sunday. Bill McCullough, a Utah Power and Light employee, was eventually called and managed to somehow rescue the cat. “Thanks goes to him from the cat’s owner and friend,” the article reads. 1976-2000 POCATELLO — A hit-and-run incident took place between a husband and wife, the Idaho State Journal reported on May 26, 1977. The incident happened on West Gould near Main Street in Pocatello after 1 a.m. on May 26. A woman driving westbound said her husband in another car hit her from the rear. Officers reported about 80 feet of skid marks on the downgrade towards Main Street. The woman was taken to St. Anthony Hospital for X-rays. Officers said the woman’s husband admitted to knowing about the accident when he was found at home.
