Rimrock Elementary School in Ammon | Photo by Justin Benziger AMMON — A local elementary school is working with the sheriff’s office after a report that a man tried to lure a student into his car with candy. According to an email sent to parents from Rimrock Elementary Principal Steven Cziep, a parent contacted law enforcement Tuesday afternoon, stating that a man in a Jeep offered candy to a student and tried to lure them into his car on 21st Street. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, and the school says it is working closely with the District Safety Team. “Out of an abundance of caution, we’ve increased supervision during arrival, lunch and dismissal times,” says Cziep in the email. “Deputies are also assisting us by monitoring the area. In addition, our staff is speaking with students in age-appropriate ways to reinforce personal safety without causing unnecessary fear or anxiety.” Bonneville County Sheriff spokesman Lt. Bryan Lovell says the school deputy investigated the report, and the deputy believes it was an isolated incident that occurred as school was being released, with many cars driving slowly by. Lovell says deputies found no evidence of criminal intent, but he says it’s important to report anything that makes you uncomfortable to law enforcement. “It’s always a good idea to talk to your kids about stranger danger,” says Lovell. “Parents can’t be everywhere at once; teachers and school administrators can’t be everywhere at once; and kids should always know who their trusted adults are.” The school recommends speaking with your children about the importance of staying safe, reminding them not to approach people they don’t know, and telling them to immediately report anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. “We are committed to keeping our students safe and will continue working with law enforcement to ensure a secure environment for everyone,” says Cziep in the email. The post Local elementary school increases security after report of man trying to lure a child with candy appeared first on East Idaho News.
