IDAHO FALLS — As Christians celebrate Holy Week in preparation for Easter, parishioners at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Idaho Falls discovered explicit graffiti on their building.
An expletive statement towards Jesus Christ, as well as other offensive phrases, were written in yellow paint on the church’s brick sometime during the night between Monday and Tuesday. Idaho Falls Police Department spokeswoman Jessica Clements says someone called officers to report the vandalism Tuesday morning.
“We are saddened and disappointed by what happened but I also pray for the person or the people who did it,” St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Pastor Nancy Amos told EastIdahoNews.com. “Clearly they’re in pain and if there is a way we can reconcile and maybe talk about why this happened or what’s going on in their lives I would be open to have that kind of conversation.”
While the church was vandalized it’s not stopping the planned worship services. Through Facebook Live Amos plans to hold virtual services at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Sunday, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will be holding two parking lot worship services at 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. which will also be live-streamed on the church’s Facebook page.
Anyone with information about the vandalism, including surveillance video can contact the Idaho Falls Police Department at (208) 529-1200 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at www.ifcrime.org.
