NEWDALE — A Driggs man was arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence after he crashed his truck into a Newdale apartment building.
Fremont County EMS was notified around 4 a.m. Friday that a truck had crashed into the building at 111 Main Street in Newdale. Police, fire and ambulance responded to the scene, according to Fremont County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Bart Quayle.
According to court documents, police officers could smell alcohol on the driver, Casey W. Cleverley, 21. His speech, the officers reported, was slow and lethargic. Cleverley was also swaying back and forth while he talked to officers.
Cleverley refused a blood draw to test for alcohol; however, police were granted a warrant for the draw. Cleverly was arrested on scene and booked into the Fremont County Jail for DUI. A blood draw was performed by a paramedic at the jail. Results are still pending.
No injuries were reported at the crash in Newdale, and the extent of the building damage is unclear. Christa Forte, who resides in the apartment, told EastIdahoNews.com, “it was a rough night.”
This is Cleverley’s second DUI in as many months. Court records show he was cited on Friday, March 25, by Teton County Sheriff’s deputies. At that incident, Cleverley admitted he had been drinking and was intoxicated.
During that incident, Cleverley agreed to and subsequently failed a field sobriety test. The breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.16, which is above the legal limit of 0.08, according to police. He was transported to Teton County Sheriff’s office and then cited and released pending a court hearing. His driver’s license was also suspended.
Though Cleverley has been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
