This map from avalanche.org shows avalanche danger in the area on Thursday morning. Yellow is moderate, and orange is considerable. ISLAND PARK — Recreationists in the Centennial Mountains near Island Park should be especially aware of avalanches. The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center in Bozeman issued an avalanche watch on Thursday morning, which is to be in effect until Friday at 5 a.m. On Friday, the avalanche danger is expected to rise to high. Right now, the avalanche danger is listed as considerable in the area, according to avalanche.org. Surrounding regions near Yellowstone National Park have the same rating. “Heavy snowfall is expected to overload pre-existing weaknesses in the snowpack and create very dangerous avalanche conditions,” according to the avalanche watch, which was shared by Fremont County Emergency Management. “Avalanche conditions will become very dangerous, and travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avoid traveling on or under slopes steeper than 30 degrees. As the storm progresses, avalanches may be triggered from flat terrain underneath steeper slopes.” Go to mtavalanche.com or avalanche.org for more detailed information on possible avalanches.
