Alan Douglas Bruce | Custer County Sheriff’s Office CHALLIS — Deputies have arrested a man for the alleged murder of a missing 47-year-old, whose body still hasn’t been found. According to a news release from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested 70-year-old Alan Douglas Bruce on Monday for the alleged murder of Patrick Shelton, who has been missing since Thursday. Bruce is charged with felony murder and felony destruction of evidence. Kathy Rodgers, a Custer County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, says Bruce was arrested “without incident,” but it is not yet clear what evidence was found to bring charges against him. He was supposed to return on Saturday, May 10, around 3 p.m., but never returned. Deputies found Shelton’s red 2001 Dodge Ram flatbed pickup and his dog around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the Big Hill Area, west of Challis. The sheriff’s office, along with numerous other search teams, including Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue, was searching for Shelton’s remains in the vicinity of the vehicle. Two dog teams and thermal imaging drones were also involved. On Monday at 3:26 p.m., the sheriff’s office suspended search and rescue operations, saying the situation had changed and that they were now focusing on recovering Shelton’s remains. “Due to concurrent investigation, the disappearance of Patrick Shelton has been officially deemed a homicide,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “The Custer County Sheriff’s Office has taken a suspect into custody.
