Swig, the original drive-thru soda shop, is opening inside the old Nitro Car Wash at 303 North 2nd East in Rexburg. | Nate Eaton, EastIdahoNews.com REXBURG – Utah’s original soda shop will soon have a home in Rexburg. Nitro Car Wash at 303 North Second East is under construction with a sign out front that says “COMING SOON Swig.” EastIdahoNews.com reached out to Swig’s corporate office for details about the project. In an emailed response, a company representative provided little information, but hinted when it would be complete. “I can send you more details about the new store in Rexburg when we are closer to opening in Q1 of next year,” she wrote. We are awaiting additional information from the city of Rexburg about the project. Swig is a drive-thru soda fountain chain founded in April 2010 by Nicole Tanner in St. George, Utah, according to its Wikipedia page. Swig is generally considered to be the creator of the dirty soda trend. “Tanner found that while she and her husband enjoyed pebble ice drinks, such as those served at Sonic, they found it could be inconvenient waiting in line behind others who were ordering food just to get drinks. Tanner founded Swig as a drink-focused restaurant, serving a limited menu of items from a local bakery,” a New York Times article about the business says. The menu on its website has an assortment of 42 soda combinations. It also offers a variety of refreshers and revivers, cookies, pretzel bites and more. The franchise has more than 80 locations in seven states. It opened its first Idaho location in 2021. The Larry H. Miller Company became a majority stakeholder in the company in November 2022. This photo was taken from Ball Ventures’ Facebook post about a Swig location opening in Lehi, Utah. Earlier this year, Swig was featured prominently in the Hulu reality series, “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.” RELATED | Latter-day Saint women share their stories in ‘The Not-So-Secret Lives of REAL Mormon Wives’ Nitro Car Wash, which recently closed after just a few years of business, was formerly occupied by Ray’s Chevron. It’s not clear why Swig chose this particular location, but company execs are excited to introduce the franchise to Rexburg customers. “It may sound so weird to some people who have never been, but it’s happiness in a cup. I’ve always known from the start that this is something that can and should go everywhere,” Tanner told the New York Times. The post The shop that coined the term ‘dirty soda’ is coming to Rexburg early next year appeared first on East Idaho News.
