When people buy a Pet Friendly License Plate from the Department of Motor Vehicles, a portion of the funds go toward spaying and neutering grants. Full-price cat spaying and neutering ranges from $120 to $200. With a voucher, Madison County residents only pay $50 per spay or neuter. “We are trying to help out those that are struggling to afford it because we want the animals to stay with the families,” said Scott Chapman, the Rexburg animal control officer. “A lot of people get overwhelmed if their cat gets pregnant, and they don’t want to take care of the kittens. They don’t know what to do.” Chapman estimates between 100 to 130 cats can be fixed with this grant. “We have such an issue with stray cats in the community,” Chapman said. The spay and neuter vouchers are not exclusive to cat owners. Residents can also capture stray cats and bring them in to get fixed. Afterward, they can turn them loose. To receive a voucher, bring your cat and proof of residence to the Rexburg Animal Shelter. Once you have a voucher, you can bring your cat to the Cedar Ridge Animal Hospital or the Upper Valley Vet Clinic to get fixed. Up to three cats per household can be treated with a voucher. “Part of the responsibility of being a pet owner is getting them fixed,” Chapman said. “There’s not always going to be these grants.” For more information, contact the Rexburg Animal Shelter on Facebook, AnimalShelter@rexburg.org or phone at (208) 359-3005.The post The price to fix your cat in Madison County has been cut appeared first on East Idaho News.
