Seven people died in the crash, which involved a Dodge Ram pickup truck and a Mercedes van. Three of the van occupants were airlifted to hospitals – one to Bozeman, Montana, and two to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, according to Idaho State Police. Madison Memorial Hospital spokesperson Douglas McBride says five people were transported by ambulance to the Rexburg hospital, with three being released that day, and two others being admitted and later discharged on Sunday. The driver of the tour van was licensed in California. The passengers included 12 Chinese nationals and one of Italian nationality, according to a news release from Idaho State Police. The group was traveling to Yellowstone National Park on an excursion organized by Ctour Holiday, a large-scale tour operator that provides international travel services. According to a news release from the Idaho State Police, investigators have determined the Dodge crossed the center line and struck the eastbound passenger van. “The reason the pickup crossed the center line remains unknown and is under investigation,” says the release. “Crash reconstruction is ongoing, and ISP troopers are working to determine all contributing factors.” Due to a commercial vehicle’s involvement and the magnitude of the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board is also conducting an independent investigation, says ISP. Blake Higley. “We are incredibly grateful to the passersby who stopped to help and to the first responders whose quick actions and teamwork aided those in critical need. This was a challenging and emotional scene for everyone involved.” Those who died in the crash will be transported to the Ada County Coroner’s Office for autopsies and formal confirmation of identity.
