AMMON — Deputies arrested an Ammon man on Sunday who allegedly tried to strangle a woman who had a protection order against him.
Travis Lynn Wheeler, 38, is now charged with felony attempted strangulation and domestic battery. He is also charged with misdemeanor charges of violation of a protection order, malicious injury to property, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
It began Sunday around 10 a.m., according to a news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called to a home on Dakota Drive in Ammon for a domestic disturbance.
The victim said Wheeler came inside unannounced and uninvited, demanding to see their baby. When the victim told Wheeler to leave and said she would call 911, he allegedly grabbed her and threw her to the floor.
“Deputies were told Mr. Wheeler was sitting on top of the victim holding her down and pushing her arm around her neck tight enough she was having trouble breathing as she tried to yell for help,” the news release says.
As Wheeler drove away, deputies says he drove his SUV into the victim’s car.
Another deputy found Wheeler inside his car at the Stinker Station near 25th East and 17th Street. When in custody, Wheeler reportedly told deputies he went to the victim’s home where the two argued. He also said he knew of the protective order that was supposed to keep him from seeing the victim.
When asked about hitting the vehicle, Wheeler claimed his brakes failed, causing him to hit the woman’s car.
Wheeler denied ever trying to strangle the victim.
Inside Wheeler’s SUV, a K9 dog alerted deputies, who found approximately 8.5 grams of Marijuana THC oil and a vaping device with THC oil residue.
An initial appearance for Wheeler is scheduled for Monday afternoon, where a judge will set his bail.
Although Wheeler is charged with a crime, it does not necessarily mean he committed it. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
