Community choir to perform ‘Messiah’ during sing-in event in Ammon

AMMON — A community choir made up of people from throughout eastern Idaho will perform George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” this weekend.
The nondenominational Christmas concert will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Thunder Ridge High School Performing Arts Center in Ammon.
The event was organized by Ammon Mayor Sean Coletti, who, after a conversation with a friend, decided it would be worthwhile to see if there was community interest in performing the famed choral arrangement. Coletti talked to members of the community and advertised the performance and found many people interested in participating.
The impromptu choir now has over 100 volunteer musicians, including 10 soloists from Bonneville, Jefferson and Madison counties. The orchestra is comprised of 15 volunteers.
“We’re just a bunch of people that have gotten together because we love the music and wanted to do this,” Coletti said.
The concert will not perform the entire “Messiah,” due to its length. However, it will perform a wide variety of numbers, particularly the pieces that are heard during Christmas such as the “Hallelujah Chorus” or “For Unto Us A Child Is Born.” The event is also a “sing-in,” which means the audience will be invited to sing along during several numbers, Coletti said.
The concert is free, and Coletti says that everyone is welcome.
“We’re hoping to start an annual tradition,” Coletti said. “It’s a fun production. We might not be professionals, but it still sounds pretty good.”
