EastIdahoNews.com file photo, Aug. 2024 REXBURG – Three teens are in custody Sunday following multiple car thefts and burglaries in Rexburg. It all started Friday around 10:30 p.m. in the Henderson subdivision between Pioneer Road and 5th West, according to a news release from the Rexburg Police Department. The suspect’s names have not been released — and may not be because they are minors — but the reporting party described them as “possibly Hispanic.” In the initial Facebook post, the department reported “two suspicious young people,” a boy and a girl, were trying to get into houses and cars near the Everett Place apartments. “At this point, we know one tablet was stolen from a car. A vehicle was eventually stolen,” Rexburg PD wrote. A deputy with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office later saw the suspects on the railroad tracks at 5th West and 4th South. The stolen vehicle was “disabled and stuck,” according to police, and the suspects ran away. Police began tracking the suspects on foot, and using drones. Hours later, shortly after midnight, police found the suspects, who they believe were trying to steal or burglarize another vehicle in the area of Grand Loop. “They were spooked off by a car alarm and fled towards Johnson Street,” officers said. Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, police reported two suspects were in custody after the discovery of “at least one more stolen vehicle which was recovered in Idaho Falls, as well as other stolen items which have not yet been recovered.” The exact location and specifics about the stolen items are unclear. A third suspect is in custody, as of 5:13 a.m. The investigation is ongoing. EastIdahoNews.com has reached out to Rexburg Police Chief Josh Rhodes for additional information.
