RIGBY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accidental discharge of a handgun by a juvenile that resulted in a self-injury.
Sheriff Steve Anderson reports at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies were called to 575 North 4200 East in Jefferson County. They learned a 17-year-old male had received a gunshot wound to the chest.
Further investigation revealed the juvenile was meeting friends to fish on a river. He removed his .22 caliber handgun from his vehicle, and the weapon discharged accidentally striking him in the left chest area.
The victim and witnesses confirmed the story, according to a news release.
The juvenile was taken by air ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls and he is expected to recover.
No foul play is suspected, and the incident has been deemed accidental.
