POCATELLO – Local artists will be putting their skills to the test during a competition in Pocatello Saturday night.
The Oasis Sports Bar at 304 North Main Street is hosting Art Battle. Artists will have 20 minutes per round to create works of art. The winner of the evening, chosen by the audience, will have a chance to be considered the ultimate champion and move on to the National Championships.
Art Battle got started in 2001 by Sean Bono, Simon Plashkes, and Chris Pemberton of New York. They were inspired by the art scene and discovered there was a frustration building among artists. Many felt they were being pushed aside by a handful of people who controlled the art world, limiting their ability to get noticed.
In response, the trio hosted the first Art Battle in Houston, Texas where the people selected the winners. The contest was such a hit it gained national attention and quickly evolved into the tournament it is today.
Today’s format has twelve artists compete in three 20-minute rounds. The winners are picked by those in attendance. Each artist creates at least one piece of art, two if they are chosen for the final round. At the end of the evening, the hand-crafted works are put into a silent auction and can be taken home by audience members.
The doors for the Art Battle at Oasis Bar open at 9 p.m. The contest will begin at 10 p.m. Those who are competing are given canvas, basic selections of acrylic paint, easels, water containers, palettes, and mixing plates. Any artist chosen to participate can bring their brushes and other tools.
This year’s competitors are Ash Elliot, David G. Seter, Jim Murphy, Braden Mangum, Ruby Morris, Zach Lewis, Marmot, and Quienton Kirstine. There might be a few more additions before Saturday’s event. Artists are required to submit their work to apply.
The event is for people 21 and over. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here.
