Boise State head football coach Spencer Danielson signed a contract extension. | Idaho Statesman. BOISE (Idaho Statesman) — Boise State football coach Spencer Danielson is in line to get a hefty raise — and a contract extension — after leading the program for one highly successful season. Danielson and Boise State agreed to a contract extension through the 2029 season, pending final approval by the Idaho State Board of Education, and his salary eventually could increase by more than $1 million. Danielson’s original contract in 2023 called for a base salary of $1.1 million in year one with an increase of $100,000 every year. Now Danielson would make $2 million this year and his salary would again increase by $100,000 increments, eventually paying him $2.4 million in 2029, if the State Board gives the go-ahead, which is likely. The 36-year-old became a first-time head coach with the Broncos after taking over on an interim basis at the end of 2023 for Andy Avalos. In 2024 the team went 12-2 and played in the Fiesta Bowl in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, where they lost to Penn State. “Spencer has proven to be the right leader at the right time for Boise State football and our university as a whole,” Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey said in a news release. “We ask all of our staff to be bar raisers, and Spencer is a perfect example of what it means for Boise State and this community. “I am proud to see him not only develop champions on the field, proven by this past year’s trip to the College Football Playoff, but also champions in life. We are grateful for him and his family believing in this place, and we are excited for What’s Next.” Danielson, 36, owns a 15-3 career record as head coach and has won back-to-back Mountain West championships. In 2024, he was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year, a finalist for the Eddie Robinson and Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year national honors, and the FCA Grant Teaff Coach of the Year. “First, thank you to Jeramiah Dickey and the entire Boise State University leadership team for trusting me, our coaching staff, and our student-athletes to represent this great university and community each and every day,” Danielson said. “I truly believe it’s my calling to be the head coach at Boise State. “My family and I want to be here and serve Bronco Nation through our football program — not only with wins and championships, but as we help develop young men for the next stages of their lives. We are fired up for the future of Boise State football.” Should Danielson terminate his contract early, he would have to pay the university $3.5 million if he leaves on or before Feb. 28, 2026. The penalty would decrease by $500,000 each year, with the final year of his contract calling for an early termination fee of $1 million. The post Boise State gives Danielson big raise after just one season.
